“You can’t always choose where you start, but you can choose where you go.”

For four years, Cindy Vermeiren has been part of Grant Thornton’s Legal team where she progressed to her current role as Manager Paralegal. Her dedication and positive impact were recently also recognised with a GT NXT Award as Ambassador of the Year. Outside work, she enjoys spending time with her two sons, cheering them on from the sidelines of a football pitch and watching them grow into confident young men.

It’s a role she treasures deeply. Not just because she loves being a mother, but because she knows how much a supportive environment can shape a child’s future. Growing up, opportunities were not always a given for Cindy.

Strength by example

"My childhood was far from easy," Cindy says. Growing up in a challenging environment taught her resilience from an early age. When her abusive father finally left the family, her mother was suddenly faced with raising four children on her own. But rather than focusing on what was missing, Cindy learned to focus on what is possible.

That mindset still guides her today. Through hard work, determination and a positive outlook, she built her own path, both as a professional and as a mother. "You can't always choose where you start, but you can choose what you do next."

Along the way, she drew inspiration from her mother's perseverance and commitment to giving her children every opportunity to succeed. That example continues to inspire Cindy every day.

Make noise for the gamechangers

Gamechangers are people who make a difference, often when you least expect it. And those who grow up facing poverty of opportunity can be gamechangers too.

This summer, Grant Thornton and Hockey Belgium are joining forces before, during and after the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. Together, we're breaking the silence and making a powerful statement in support of equal opportunities for all.

Growing beyond your comfort zone

The lessons Cindy learned early in life shaped the way she approaches opportunities today. Rather than settling for what feels safe, she believes growth happens when you dare to challenge yourself and step into the unknown.

"I've always believed in pushing myself a little further. Not because I have to prove something to others, but because I know what it took for my family to get where we are today."

That mindset has guided many of the decisions in her life. After sixteen years in a comfortable role, she decided it was time for a new challenge. Joining Grant Thornton meant stepping outside her comfort zone and discovering what she was truly capable of.

"I knew I could have stayed where I was. It would have been comfortable. But I also knew there was more potential waiting to be explored."

The decision proved worthwhile. What started as a step outside her comfort zone became an opportunity to discover new strengths, develop her career and ultimately grow into her current role as Manager Paralegal.

Cherish the people by your side

When Cindy reflects on what made the biggest difference in her life, she doesn't talk about achievements or titles. She talks about people.

Her mother, who taught her perseverance. Her sisters, who stood by her side. Her children, who motivate her every day. And the people around her who believe in her, even when she struggles to believe in herself.

"The people around you are often more supportive than you realise. Don't be afraid to talk."

Throughout her own journey, she learned that strength doesn't mean doing everything alone. It means allowing yourself to lean on the people who genuinely care about you.

Building a brighter future

Today, Cindy tries to pass those lessons on to her sons.

"I want them to know that they don't have to be perfect. I want them to be happy, to believe in themselves and to know that every setback is a chance to try again."

Giving them opportunities she didn't always have growing up is something she values enormously, whether that's supporting their hobbies, encouraging their ambitions or simply being there when they need her.

Never underestimate how far you’ve come

Cindy hopes her story can encourage others who are facing difficult circumstances. Her message is simple.

"When life feels overwhelming, take a moment to look back at the mountain you've already climbed, not just the one that's still ahead of you."
