Call me by my name. Not my gender.

Bold statement for gender equity

In a world where labels often overshadow individuality, gender inequality remains a persistent issue. Too often, people are defined by their gender, rather than recognised for their talent and dedication.

That's why we joined forces with Hockey Belgium to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the unique identity of every player—not by their gender, but by their name, their story, and their achievements.

During the Red Panthers’ match on 28 June, we wanted to make a bold statement for gender equity and inclusion. Together with the Red Panthers, we made it our goal to raise awareness around this theme, break down stereotypes, and position hockey as a sport where individual and team achievements, and the uniqueness of each player, are far more important than labels such as gender.

Together, Grant Thornton and Hockey Belgium are proud to carry this message forward: Call me by my name. Not my gender.

What did you miss on the field on 28 June?

To bring the powerful message to the field, the Red Panthers wore unique shirts during their exciting game against the Netherlands on 28 June.

In the first half, players wore shirts with gendered nicknames like “Meiske” or “Lady”. Meanwhile the stadium speaker used these labels instead of their real names to highlight the absurdity of defining athletes by gender.

In the second half, the players returned wearing shirts with their real names—“Call me Emma,” “Call me Delphine”—symbolizing the shift from stereotype to self.

"For me, equal treatment shouldn't have to be earned. But in the end, that's how it went."

- Delphine Marien, Red Panther

In this powerful video, five Red Panthers open up about their experiences navigating gender labels in the world of hockey. As elite athletes representing Belgium on the international stage, they share how they experience the difference between men and women - on and off the field.
